Watched an instructional video on this web site the other day which had been produced by a Welder Manufacturer. The person in the video was welding with a flux core welder. During the whole video he was not using the cup covering the contact tip....! Is this something that can be done normally or is it not recommended....figured it was considered okay if video was by a manufacturer. Any comments....? Thanks..... Rickzzz

Flux core is either "dual-shield", requiring gas, and the nozzle, or "inner-shield", wich does not require gas, and therefore no nozzle. Unless he was welding inside a purge-box, he was using an inner-shield wire.

I prefer a nozzle either way, because my hands aren't as steady as they once were.

A note on flux-core, whether gas-shielded or self-shielded: Read the specification. Some require reverse-polarity (DCEP) and some require straight polarity (DCEN).
