I'm gonna have a bunch of mig stuff pretty soon, 2 in tubing 3/16 wall 1/4 flat bar and angle, everything is gonna be mirror shiny and clean,  don't laugh I clean everything shiny bright, but my question is, should I use er70s6 ( which I use for most everything) or s4 or s2, probably a good question for Otto, but whats some of your guys thoughts ;) thanks John

In applications where the metal is shiny and clean, the s4 and s2 are a good choice, because the need for cleaning or "scavenging " of the weld pool isnt as high.
In my experience , the s4 wire runs smoother than S6.

+1 on what Mick said.

I just answered a similar question on the TIG forum.

If it's new steel, and shiny clean, S-2 will make the best weld. S-4 is good defense against impurities in imported "new" steel, which could have been a '53 Buick last year... S-6 allows you to get away with leaving half the mill-scale.

+1 what Mick said on technical terms.

But..... For the average "Joe weldor," ER70S-6 is "good enough" and you wouldn't really notice the difference between them all. I'd go with the least expensive and most readily available wire. That is, ER70S-6.
