Ideas for a Downhill Break test

I started my new welding task in school after completing a one chance only weld test...And I'm on a downhill 2' break test. I was kinda stuck using a different gas than I'm used to it was C10 and the machine has .045 70s6 wire....The machines are usually set up for spray but I'm supposed to be using GMAW-S...short circuit. I had set my machine a Miller Xmt on 19.1v and about 200ipm and I was using a slight weave trying to stay at the front of my puddle but whether that's happening is hard to see. When I break it one side always peels off like ya know it's not supposed to :shock: ...That's kinda why I went with the weave after the first time to try an focus on biting into the sides but so far no luck...I only got to do it twice before we ran out of steel...So I was wondering if there's any tricks or any different way to practice....or maybe any change in settings....Next week I think I'm gonna go back to a machine with C25 with .035 70s6 wire...My thinking is more CO2 will burn a little hotter an maybe melt in a lil better... Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.

You'll want to stay at the leading edge of the puddle and use a slight side to side motion. Keep the bead small by moving quickly and keep th gun angle pointed up or back towards the weld. Since it is short circut straight CO2 would be better than a mix. Pics would help. How thick is the metal?

The metal is only 3/16"....I'll take pics tmrw an see what we got. Hopefully I pass it but either way pics will be here tmrw afternoon. Thanks
