Was reading about Otto and jwmacawful writes on Topic: no certs or work experience. And started to thinking my coming Job interview. And their ofered starting wage (low) But im realy happy if i can get that job. I have passed all their cert ( T-JOINTS )what will be needed but im more conserned about drawings  Im mostly done repairing welding when i can choose what way i do the job. Old time welder who supervise certifigations in here sayd me that I have nothing to worry about my weldings at that shop theyl do fine.. When i read most of the post here more often people are worry about passing a certifigation test, but how about rest of that what comes along working whit metal?? Are you in US hired if you can past that test what is requisite.. Any advices how can i make them aware my knowledge and intresting at welding. Id thinked that i would make a somekinde of a sample something small to carry whic includes TIG-MIG any thoots?? I wont doo beer cans they may think that i like beer  Whis i would be so good allready that dident need to worry about this kind of things..(we live at time that any job is allmost welcome) Love this site thanks..

Frankly, a sample is probably a good idea. If you can bring a sample of the weld you'll be tested for, and it looks good (the interviewer is NOT a welding inspector), it may help you get to the test.

Don't bring pictures of previous work. Many companies has rules against taking pictures, so bringing pictures turns them off.

In most shops, you will need to be able to weld the way a drawing says to weld it. You'll need to know basic welding symbols, and be able to make a 4mm bead, for example, where the drawing says to. You may not need this to get the job, but you'll need to learn it on the job.

i never heard tell of someone carrying their own weld sample to a job interview but have only been on 2 myself. idk what kind of shop you're looking to work in. in mine the actual welding takes a back seat to being organised, working safely, planning and good communication between departments. if you have no welding license or cert and you're getting an interview the company probably isn't expecting much in the welding dept from you so you need to be strong in the previously mentioned areas. i'm wishing you much luck!

Ques im worry about nothing. I have all ready certification what that job requires. In fact i have more certifications what s neded at that job, I have: Mag,Mig stainless, Tig stainless-carbon-aluminium T-joints all of them in a overhead position. But still not good enought at pipe  At least i dont trust my skills at yeat whit pipe... Thats the reason why i was asking about something about to show them because i dont need to go any test because i have pass it pefore all ready.. gues that certifigation what i have is that bagbone in a interview. Im just worry about all the machines what they have in the shop water jet cuttings and els (never used). Its a like a ordering machinery shop may come many difrent kind of jobs. One thing i know that they do is forestry. (did i write it wrong forest machines) One main thing that i want that my job requises is a some kind of welding skill and complexity so that i can become better and learn about it. No one inch tack welds only. . One day year or two i will pass that 6G tig and a smaw and become a pipe welder IM 26 now. welding two years at my side job and now full day. thanks

Every place I've worked since I went into industrial welding, that stack of certifications should guarantee you a test, unless you piss someone off at the interview...

I've even worked a few jobs that didn't make me test, because I had an agent (recruiter, headhunter, whatever you call them there) that convinced them I was qualified, so I went straight to work.

No harm done jwmacawful.. So i tell you bottom of this. Here where i pass my sertifigations. A welding school teacher was fired for incompetent teaching. And some other mistakes (drinking i think) So here in 30,000 people town with 20 metal shops the news speared bretty soon. And some forment students needed to come back to school to show them knowledge about welding. One shop had called the school and asked that they have a student working who has got hes certifications from that school and doesent know anything. So the place reputation is now bretty low (this is a year now). And my certifications is performed at same place but only a difrent teacher.. Do you get the point what i mean?? Shops in near by may not appreciation that school certifications.. But I try think something maybe i will ask one old welder to recomend me there if i need to.. Just that I know i can weld more then some shell frames.. Like that Turbo I fixed, not everyone can fix them(i think) yap but lets see how this goes..

Oh, wow, that hurts...

To get your certification from a school where one bad teacher put the school's reputation in the dustbin.

Now everyone questions your certifications. :o

Consider choosing one or two certifications that are most valuable to you, and going to another school and paying just to test. I'm sure if you explain your circumstance, you can work out a good price just to test a weld or two, to back up your original certifications. If you re-prove your best certification or two at a reputable school, no one will question the basic ones.

don't think your all alone there. we got the same problems here. their called diploma mills. meanwhile we cant fill a few $100,000.00 plus base pay welding jobs cause the applicants can't pass the background/dope screen. wtf?!

when i was starting out i made sure i was working alongside older more experienced welders and made a pest of myself asking a million dumb questions. i also read everything i could get my hands on about welding, ironwork and fabrication and went to school at nite after work to learn how to make blueprints (the best way to learn how to read them) now i am that old grouchy welder and i try to pass the little that i learned over the years to the younger, less experienced guys that are asking me those same dumb questions. but seriously, i like helping them out even though i would never tell them.

If you're the one trying to make deliveries, I think they're one in the same. I used to deliver to nuclear plants and they were a serious pain to get in and out of. Prison is alot easier to get into, just don't pay your taxes.

I can imagine (or actually i cant never been even near nukes) how precise ewerything is there.. But darm i would be broud if my working papers would have report that i worked on nuke.. Because i think you must have some serious welding skills.. One job while ago here i looked was welding Duplex about 110mm or 4 inch thick wow  If i readed it right it was TIG all the way can it bee? It was Oil slick where the work was done in Norway... Gues the determination and practise pays some where when my skills grow.. Id been welding a year in school (2.5y at my own time) and learn so much more what i know before going school. Have pass Stick overhead T-joint at latest. I have hmm 7 certifications now T-joints and plate-pipe weldings. Ican thorw some pictures if youd like to see- or say something about them? I like all so to talk someones whos knowledge is more about the welding and dosent shake hes head only if i ask about something? This has helped me so much because you cant (at least in here) ask so many guestons or have the teachers time so much..
