My machinist buddy, Cag, and I both wanted belt sanders for our shops but weren't willing to fork out $4000+ for commercial ones. So, of course, we built our own.
This was a two and a half week build. Please check it out. Thanks

What welding projects are you working on? Are you proud of something you built?
How about posting some pics so other welders can get some ideas?

Yes he turned all the parts himself and I cut and welded all the structural parts. The only drawings are a couple sketches on a notepad. The only things we purchased were the 1 hp motors, the belts of course, and the bearings. And misc hardware.
Very pleased with the results. I can hog material off rapidly now. These things are beasts!
Cheers.

xwrench,
Very nice implementation, it looks like they are both well made and ready for use. I to have a 2x72 belt grinder (not sander). As you say they are beasts, able to decimate a very hard file in minutes. I wired mine for 230. I did not have the time to build it as I was still working at that time. In 2007 I purchased a KMG (Knife Makers Grinder) from Beaumont Metal Works. They come disassembled and unpainted, so I painted then assembled the grinder on a large roll-around cart.

That's a great built, xwrench!
It's nice to build two at the same time! Good for you and your buddy!
Just ordered my belt grinder from Beaumont on Thursday and should have it next Tuesday.
I'm excited to have finally a good grinder in my shop!
