For my wife's birthday a month back I built this 'coffee cart'. It's sort of a multi-functioning piece. It houses our water cooler as well as adds additional countertop space for our coffee marker and cups.

They start as carriage bolt. I chuck them up in the drill and smooth the head on the belt sander. I then cut the head off leaving the square shoulder. I drill a hole big enough for the shoulder to fit in and them tig weld the back side and grind smooth. It's a lot of work but it's the cheapest way and allows for all different sizes.
