Belt Sander

I recently made this 2" belt sander. The deciding factor for making it instead of buying one was scoring the 3/4 hp motor
for free from a friend.
I machined the pulleys myself from black delrin and the rest is just steel tubing and plate and cold rolled steel for the shafting. The rest of the mechanical
parts are from McMaster Carr. I made the whole thing for under $150 and I think I made out like a bandit. This thing rips!
I saw some other people have made there own sanders on here as well, awesome!

Hey,
Thats awesome. Nice ingenuity. See if you can design a pipe notching attachment for a side project.

Very nice job Elliot! How strong is the spring to tension the paper on the upper arm? It looks pretty healthy.

I agree with Mick on the notcher to. Build it, post the specs, then we can all steal your idea for notching our steel!

The spring had to be much stronger than I anticipated. I had several of the same ones on hand, or I doubled up on them
after concluding the one wasn't strong enough. I bet the two of them are offering somewhere in the neighborhood of
60 lbs!

Thats a great idea. I had actually already considered extending the output shaft of the motor to do so. Or perhaps some
sort of grinding wheel... If come up with something I will post some pics!

Nicely done. 2"? It looks a little wider. How do control tracking?

It uses a 2" x 60" sanding belts. I designed the sander around a belt that is very common and
readily available.
For the tracking, rather than machining a crown in the delrin pulleys I just have the flanges on
the sides. It seems to keep the belt tracking nicely.
