It's what, cast steel or iron?

I've done a drill press base which was cast steel I think it was, did it with 308L stainless, no problems.
if there's a welder, there's a way

it is not cast iron or steel. It is wrought iron .This material is what blacksmiths used before steel was available.Material was smelted in a bloomery furnace and hand hammered to refine it the material has a grain like wood. thanks for your reply will try to get some pics tommorow

On a material like that, when you really don't know the composition, avoid melting it at all and braze weld (only a figure of speech) with an oxy torch. A bazillion broken vices have been repaired this way.
