Any tips for welding Hastelloy? My welders are tasked with schedule 40 through Extra Extra heavy wall pipe majority open root but welds. Our procedure has us purging the pipe with 40-50 pounds of pure argon most of the joints have been of high quality but on some of the smaller diameter pipe I have found suck back after the cap passes have been applied. I am checking the roots with a borascope before and after cap. All joints are subject to X-ray after completion. Also we have noticed that Hasstelloy moves worse then 316 or 304 ever does. Any tips would be appreciated.

Hey there,

Don't forget to mention the grade of Hastelloy that you are using. The different grades may need specific treatment.

The only thing I can say about suck back would to be to make sure that your root run is heavy enough (thick enough) to with stand the heat of the following pass. Im not a pipe welder so maybe thats crap. Sorry. :o

Regards
Mick
