Stick Welding Tips, Certification tests, machines, projects
I’m practicing my 6G on a 6in Sch80 coupon and both me and my buddy bought 2 different 6010 type rod, he bought a 6p+ and I bought 5p+. Now both are welding like shit, we can’t get our root started worth a damn, both us are running between 80-85amps with 8/10 hot start and 3-5/10 arc force using a Lincoln Power MIG 210 MP on 220v plug in. I could really use some help on what rod to use, what amps and all. Both of us can’t seem to figure it out or find some answers to our problem. I’m thinking I need to use regular 6010 but I would like to know what’s everything I need to do before I run my root pass.

A lot of stick welders simply cannot run E6010. They cannot sustain the required arc voltage during welding to keep a 6010 properly lit. I highly suspect this is the case. It is especially common with multi-process welders, IMO.

OCV for the PowerMIG is listed as only 56V
6010 really wants between 70 - 90V to light up well.
It's running voltage (at 240V input) at 27V is OK for the PowerMIG.
This means it will kinda run 6010 when it's started, but has problems to (re-)establish an arc and it's hard to keep it going and it wants to go out.
Basically the machine is not designed to run 6010 and although it kinda-sorta does it won't be a nice experience. You'll be fighting the machine most of the time.

I have a 210mp it does not like 6010. If you have lots of experience you can keep a 3/32 lit for a while but even then it will drop out. You can crank the amps way up but even then it will drop the arc with 6010.
