I attended the WMTS http://wmts.ca/ today and it was a lot of fun.
The 3M adhesive division put on a display that really impressed me.
They taped two steel sheet metal panels together in some sort of jig.
The jig was rigged with a 10 lb sledge hammer on a swing arm.
I let this panel have it, with all my might and those two panels had one heck of a dent in them,
but the tape did its job and held the two panels together without any separation at all.

BEWARE - 3M might be trying to put all of us welders out of business.
They claim that the adhesive tape will last for more than 30 years thru many heat/cold cycles.
I might challenge them on this and design an all aluminum boat, assembled with 3M adhesive tape.

BTW - They also had another amazing tape product that removes noise vibrations from sheet metal panels.
Even the smallest 1" X 1" square patch of this acoustical tape was very effective.
The more tape and the more sound reduction. The tape was very thin and stunned me as to its effectiveness.

I had access to that tape while it was still "semi-experimental". It was being used in urban transit busses to attach body panels, and we were trying it to attach inner structure in ambulances to reduce vibration and noise. I thought it was a great success, though I'm not sure of the longevity of that version... This was ca. 1997.

I was very impressed. Seemed the perfect solution for attaching dissimilar metals to prevent electrolysis.

So this is not the wonder tape car manufacture's use to stick rear view mirrors on windshields & dealers stick on license plates ? coz after a year or two on a cold day they just drop off ! don't think it will replace welding any time soon ! I say if you must stick dissimilar things together 309L is still the way to go !
