The fuel tank on my dad's roto-tiller was hopelessly cracked. The obvious solution, make a new one from metal. As soon as the primer and a couple coats of paint are dry, I'll reassemble it. Made entirely from old scrap and a wheel from a three wheel I had in the 80's.

Cheers. What welding projects are you working on? Are you proud of something you built?
How about posting some pics so other welders can get some ideas?

That's a really rare rim to recycle ( at least over here ) - but so long as it gets the job done then fair play - I like small fire extinguishers for this sort of work - or old truck air tanks - guess it depends what's available in your scrap pile - interested to see finished item.

@ Welding mike - hey just saying - but I never seen any for sale - I had to re-hab some similar rims that were pretty much trash because the owner could not find a spare anywhere short of buying another complete bike for spares- if it's the sort I think it is that's a Honda rim used for only a couple of years & only on certain models - notably the ATC 110 - it's a tubeless split 2piece rim with an unusual wide taper bead - I'm not saying it's worth 5k - but try & find a replacement - the old ATC's still sell & fetch fair money - later ones are easier for spares - now if you had a clean 6speed 250R you'd be sitting on money - just don't see off Banshee riders - they get right up tight !

I have a knack for collecting useless old rubbish that really is worthless (not the kind that the wife says is worthless) we've got a honda mini trail, but it's in very poor condition.

There is nothing wrong with collecting " stuff " - it may junk to some people - but to those that recycle it all has a use someday if you got space to store it ! plus it's kinda a " prepper " thing - who knows when there maybe nuclear disaster or zombie apocalypse ( right ??? ) !

Thanks for the replies. This was a fun little project. The filler neck and end plates are mig welded inside and out. The fittings are tig welded and the two wheel halves also are tigged. In one spot I hit some kind of contaminant and got some ugly porosity which I ground out and rewelded. I pressured the finished tank to 45 psi and went all over with a spray bottle of soapy water. No bubbles
I think it will outlast the rest of the machine now
Cheers.

Yep... In a thousand years, some poor archaeologist will be trying to sort out what that vessel was used for, as it will be the only thing remaining. Considering the state of things today, he may assume is was some sort of rapid booze dispenser, or a bomb that was never filled with ANFO.
